Tips from Tour – Staying Mentally Healthy
post by Si Martin
It’s another mental health tip from tour! This one’s coming to you from Atlanta, Georgia! And we’re exploring the idea of staying mentally healthy. Super important for both on, and off tour!
We’ve shared this tip on our TikTok and Instagram – but kept it super short for the internet, so wanted to go into a bit more detail here, in writing.
Watch the tip below and then read a bit more about it here!
Today’s tip is a reminder to stay on top of your mental health. A lot of the time, when we talk about mental health, we’re referring to mental ill health. But the conversation about mental health should be – I think – about staying mentally healthy. And by that, I’m talking about the small, every day tasks that you can do to stay mentally healthy.
4 things you can do to stay mentally healthy
1. Exercise
And yes. I know, it can be hard to motivate yourself to exercise. But physical movement helps relieve stress, boosts your mood, and sleep better. It’s important to find the type of movement that’s right for you. Because some people are gonna enjoy running, others are gonna hate it. Some people might be all about lifting heavy things, others might not. If you find a meaningful way to move your body, you’re gonna stick with it way more than if you try and force yourself to exercise in a way that you just don’t get on with.
2. Get a good night’s sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is gonna help you stay mentally healthy. We literally need sleep! So do yourself a favour: give yourself a bedtime routine, and try to lay off the caffeine and screens (and alcohol!) before bed. We’ve gone into this in a bunch more detail in its own dedicated blog post, you can read that here! But the upshot is: sleep is gonna have a huge impact on your mental health, so make it a priority to set yourself up to get the best night’s sleep possible.
3. Practise gratitude
This is something I like to do before bed, to help myself wind down. So you get bonus points for this helping you sleep a bit better too. The theory behind this is that we’re hard wired to look for threats; it’s what’s kept us safe and alive for millennia. But that can leave your brain focussing on just the negatives in life. So we need to actively train our brains to find the positives. So try writing down 3 things you’re thankful for about every day. No matter how big or small. Over time, you’ll notice your mindset start to shift, and find it easier to pull good things out of even the worst days.
If you’re looking for a bit of a helping hand with practising gratitude every night, you can use The Positive Planner.

4. Connect with people around you
We’re stronger together. Having good people around you means you’ve got folks to turn to if you need help. And you can be there for them if they’re struggling. And everyone has different things they can bring to the table. For example, you might have a friend who you can go to for more emotional support, and then another who can just make you laugh, and someone totally different who you can go to when you just need a cwtch.
And if you feel like you have no-one around you, reach out to a helpline. They’re on your side, no matter what it is that you’re facing. (And if you need a reminder: it’s okay to call a helpline – we go into it in the video below).
