Blue Health – HATW x Reef

We recently teamed up with Reef to create a t-shirt and tote with the goal of promoting blue health, and spending time in blue spaces. But what the heck does ‘Blue health’ mean? Let’s find out together!
What is blue health?
Blue health is the concept that being in or near water has a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing. And if you’re lucky enough to be able to spend time near the ocean, then you’ve probably felt how calming it is to just listen to the waves, and clear your mind on the beach, or in the water. There’s a reason why a bunch of meditation apps use the sound of waves to help calm you down!
Blue health for your physical health
But blue health stretches beyond just mental health. Time spent in blue spaces (we’re talking bodies of water like oceans, lakes, rivers etc) can have big benefits on your physical health too.
And that kinda makes sense, right? Spending time near the coast, you’re probably gonna be walking along the beach. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you might give surfing a go..! Maybe you’re in land and you’re around a lake, if you start walking around it, you’re very likely to go all the way around it. Which is gonna help you get your steps in for sure.

But wait! There’s more!
There’s also a suggestion that spending time in blue spaces (and just in general, being outdoors) is linked to stronger social connections. Which also makes sense! Generally speaking, we engage in outdoor activities in groups. Trips to the beach, a family walk around the lake, or surfing, are all opportunities to unplug and connect with others. And connecting with others is great for your brain. So make the most of the opportunity to spend time with others, while you’re enjoying blue spaces!
A cure for the blues
Blue health is a real game changer for your overall wellbeing. Whether you’re catching waves, doing a cold water plunge, chasing water falls, or just taking a stroll along a river, you’re doing your mind and body a solid. So get out in some blue space the next time you’re feeling low. It can really help!
